LEGEND OF THE PEACH WOOD SWORD

It is a bit of a cliche in Wuxia novels and 1980s Hong Kong movies, but the peach Wood sword is a real item of Daoist magic. I've personally seen it immediately disintegrate goetic style spirits here in England. It is a powerful weapon indeed. Yet not many understand its origin or its symbolism.

The Peach makes a frequent appearance in Taoist iconography. Dao, the word for peach, is a homophone of Dao, the Way. The Peach has come to symbolise the ultimate fruit of the Dao, Longevity and immortality.

The peach Wood sword will be forever associated with Feicheng in Shandong Province in China where Tao Shan, Peach Mountain stands. One Taoist god, Nanji Laoren the Southern Pole Old Gentleman or more simply, Nanji Xian, is always said to carry a large peach plucked from an ancient tree in Feicheng. Nanji is pictured as a diminutive old man with whispy beard and large forehead. Holding a Daoist staff and a peach. The Peach isn't giant as most assume but appears big because of Nanji's small size. He is one of the Seven gods of Longevity, each associated with certain stars. Nanji's star is Canopus. To the Chinese Canopus was always low on the southern horizon shimmering in a red colour, the light of life, and to the Chinese mind, a celestial peach.

The Peach trees of Feicheng are thus the best for making the Taoist Sword encapsulating the powers of yang life and Longevity. The Peach is also symbol of sexual energy, the alchemical basis of Magical energy.

Tao Shan, Peach Mountain in Feicheng was said to have nearby, 72 caves that in ancient more chaotic days housed an array of demons and ghosts. Every night the demon horde would descend on Feicheng City and besiege the people. Dancing wildly in the streets, terrifying, raping and killing the citizens of that city.

The demonic horde spread all across that area. The gods of Dushuo Mountain, Tu and Yulei finally had enough and flew to Feicheng. They looked around for materials to make their swords... and chose the peach Wood of Feicheng's numinous trees. They then dispatched the demons. The Peach Wood sword is still best cut from peach branches made from branches facing the South East, as that's the direction the Gods came from when they reached Feicheng.
